L. J. Hardy, longtime member and one of the Headland Country Club Charter Members as well as a past President, passed away on Saturday, October 2nd. The entire Headland Country Club family extends its condolences to the family and it’s appreciation for the long service that Mr. L. J. has given to the club over the past 50 years. He will be missed.

TUMBLETON COMMUNITY…..L. J. Hardy, a resident of County Road 99, Tumbleton community, died Saturday morning, October 2, 2010, at his home. He was 89.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, October 4, 2010, in the New Zion Free Will Baptist Church with Reverend Joey Pettis and Mr. Sam White officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 P.M. Sunday at the mortuary in Headland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Zion Free Will Baptist Church Building Fund or to the New Zion Free Will Cemetery Fund, c/o David Teat, 10033 County Road 47, Shorterville, AL 36373.
Mr. Hardy was born in Houston County, near Headland, son of the late Lonnie Jefferson Hardy, Sr. and Clifford McClenny Hardy. He moved to the Tumbleton community in 1946 where he lived all his adult lifetime. Mr. Hardy was a 1941 graduate of Houston County High School. He served his country in the United States Army Air Corps, 8th Air Force Division, and was stationed in Norwich, England during World War II. Mr. Hardy began his employment with Patterson Hardware in Headland in 1952 and owned and operated the business until his retirement. He was a member of the New Zion Free Will Baptist Church where he formerly served as church treasurer for nineteen years.
A member of the Browns Crossroads Masonic Lodge #529, Mr. Hardy received his fifty year pin. He was a charter member of the Headland Country Club and also served as Past President. Mr. Hardy developed Hardy Estates in Tumbleton where he constructed two homes and donated the property for the New Zion Free Will Baptist Church Parsonage after it was destroyed by a tornado. He was an avid golfer and over his lifetime he shot six holes in one making his last one at the age of eighty-four. Mr. Hardy was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Dawn Hardy Lewis, two brothers, Curtis Hardy and Oree Marvin Hardy, two half-brothers, Lester Hardy and Earnest Hardy and also a half-sister, Trudie Mae Adkins.
Surviving relatives include his wife of sixty-seven years, Dot Shelley Hardy; two daughters, Judy Hardy Skipper and husband, John; Zelda Hardy Oates and husband, Wyatt; two sons, Kyle Hardy and wife, Dianne; Jerry Hardy and wife, Colleen, all of the Tumbleton community; a sister, Mary Ethel Hardy Ethridge, Dothan; a brother, Thurman (Fireball) Hardy, Kinsey; ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; numerous special nieces and nephews including, Sherry Barrett, Dothan; and Sheila Shelley, Lake Martin, AL; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Janis Reynolds Hardy, Dothan; Nina Shelley Killingsworth, Tumbleton community; Ida Shelley Wilson, Dothan; Janelle Sanders Shelley and Ellie Mae Sanders Shelley, both of Tumbleton community.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Neal Hardy, Kylie Hardy, Adam Hardy, Jeffrey Hardy, Josh Oates, Jarrod Oates, Jay Skipper and Jordan Lewis. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be George Lewis, Todd Albert, Thomas Hutto, Dr. Roland Bridges, Preston Brooks and Tim Grace. The family wishes to express a special thanks to AlaCare Hospice and Mr. Hardy’s caregivers, Angela Armstrong, Teresa Sewell and Kerrie Stewart for the loving care and kindness shown to Mr. Hardy and his family.
